2017 has been a year for women. Okay, I recognize this may be an unpopular opinion. BUT, let’s not forget the Women’s March! I have never felt so empowered as I did during the Women’s March of 2017. I live streamed the event as I was cleaning my kitchen that morning. One moment I was scrubbing dishes and sobbing and the next I was cheering and throwing my towel in the air. I had never in my life seen such a gathering by and for women, and it was INCREDIBLY liberating. This moment has prompted me to reflect on the inspiring women who empower me and encourage me to be a warrior, and Cheryl Strayed is at the top of that list.
If you don’t know who Cheryl Strayed is, I would recommend picking up one of her books, Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar or Wild: From Lost to Found on The Pacific Crest Trail, to get to know her. She used to write an anonymous advice column, Dear Sugar. It has since turned into a podcast with uniquely refreshing and heartfelt advice. She is also the author of the novel, Torched.
IMHO, Cheryl is the one of the most authentic and true writers you will find. Wild brought me to silent tears, because it is so pure and beautiful. In a recent podcast, Cheryl shared that she cried every time she sat down to write Wild, and you can easily know this statement is true when you read the book. It’s my all-time favorite memoir; a book has never spoken to my heart like that before. I also love Tiny Beautiful Things, because it is my go-to when I am seeking advice or a pick-me up.
